It started at 10:00 this morning, and is still going strong as I write this post.
The Annual Chili Cookoff brings Fire Departments from Greater Tucson together annually to vie for the best chili, the best booth, and who knows what else? It was a party, and we got there at 3:00 p.m. and only stayed until 5:00. It won't end until 10:00 tonight!
The Tucson Firefighters' Adopt-A-Family program takes center stage each year as fire fighters and their families come together to raise money.
I'm sure we didn't get them all, as more than 20 fire departments cover greater Tucson and Pima County, but I had a three ounce cup of chili from ten or twelve representative fire halls:
- Tucson Fire Fighters--several fire houses had entries.
- Raytheon Fire Fighters
- Drexel Heights Fire Fighters
- Northwest Fire Fighters
- Rural Metro Fire Fighters
My favorite? The booth manned by the B shift of Fire House 16 (B shift) made my favorite chili. It wasn't too thick, didn't have too many beans, and the level of !hot! matched the energy of the folks you see there to the left.
Notice the Javelina in the top left of the photo.
He deserves a closeup.
The ladies didn't say whether he was included in the recipe, and I didn't ask.
