This post won't teach you anything about HTML meta tags. Active Rainers have already paved that street. This post is a success story for my brand, Mike in Tucson. Three things converged to bring about that success:
- the genius of the Active Rain business model,
- Active Rain members who read and comment on my blog, and
- little things called "tags."
I found Active Rain in July. Inman News did an article on AR's explosive growth. I signed up.
Writing is right up my alley, but I didn't know diddly about how search engines work, why a particular result comes up first on a Google search when I "google," or anything else about websites. For a month, I floundered around, writing about this and that, and capturing a limited readership.
In September, Renee Burrows of Las Vegas posted Moving Up to Tag Cloud Purgatory. She included it on the group Active Rain Newbies, and I read it. Bingo! I understood the power of tags, and immediately went back, a few posts per day, and cleaned up my tags. Here's what I did:
- I re-examined my business brand of four years, and dumped it.
- I created a new brand: Mike in Tucson. Tucson has 38 Michael W. Jones's, but only one Mike in Tucson.
- My web guy, Donte' Ormsby of FX Studios, began work on MikeinTucson.com
- I signed off every post with Mike in Tucson.
- I tagged every post with those same three little words: Mike in Tucson.
- As often as possible, (when the content supported it) I signed off each post as follows: And that's the real estate opinion of this Tucson, Arizona mortgage lender, Mike in Tucson. My tags are tucson, tucson mortgage, arizona, and mike in tucson.
Most importantly, I kept on blogging on Active Rain. Google can't find you if you're not posting content to your weblog and tagging it.
- If you subscribe to my blog, you know me as "Mike in Tucson."
- When I comment on your blog, you see "Mike in Tucson."
- If you have a sidebar from mybloglog.com, there I am!
- If you call my cellphone, you'll hear "Hi! This is Mike in Tucson..."
Last week, several of my readers got a call from me during the business day. "Hi, is this _________?" A moment of silence as they tried to register the voice... "Yes?" was usually the tentative response. "This is Mike in Tucson." "No way!" was typical of the responses. Remember that not one of the AR members I called had ever had a phone call from me. And yet not one of them, in the midst of their own busy day, replied "Who?"
Today, I went to Google's home page and typed in (you guessed it) Mike in Tucson.
I clicked "I'm Feeling Lucky." (If you've never clicked that button, you need to know that it takes you to the first page out of all possible choices.)
Up came my Active Rain profile! Clicking Google Search will give the same results, but it's not as dramatic--not as much fun!
So go back up to Renee Burrow's link. Read her post, leave a comment telling her why you came, and go to work cleaning up your tags. If you're a Newbie, like I was in July, the results will open your eyes to the combined power of Active Rain, blogging, tags and Google. Your phone will start to ring. Mine has! If it works for me, I know it will work for you.
And that's the real estate opinion of this Tucson, Arizona mortgage lender,
Mike in Tucson

Sheri: Thanks for commenting. What has it done for you?

Great job Mike in Tucson. I'm going to read Renee's post right now. Thanks for the heads up!

Mike,
Fantastic post! Thanks for sharing the ideas with us!
Mike
Thanks for sharing more great information. I didn't have a clue about tags before and now you've provided a great starting point for me.
Aw Geez. Now you've reminded me that I need to clean up my tags --- again. Oh well, work for Crystal. I've cleaned up my tags, there are about a zillion of them, two or three times now. Once to remove the ".com" from homefinders.com and once to add "realtor".
But, my tags are in serious need of a house cleaning.
Thanks.
Mike,
I went over to see Renee. Told her you sent me.
Good post, and another "gotta do" item.
Howdy Mike in Tucson
Your the man! Congrats to you on moven on up the Google ladder. I will take your good advise and see what I can come up with. Oh by the way no snow in my part of NH yet. It's in the 30's here in Charlestown right now.
Have a good one
Dale
I think you all are completely missing the point. NO CUSTOMER would ever search for "Mike in Tuscon"! Why would you even care about that! You want to come up for and optimize your site for 'Tuscon Arizona real estate". THAT'S what normal real estate buyers are searching for.... not "Mike in Tuscon"!
Howdy Bev
If that is your name that is. I can tell you that Mike knows what he is talking about. You put in Tuscon and Mike in Tuscon will come up.
Mike sorry but I had to jump in there.
Have a good one
Dale
Mike--Being able to be found easily is what I like about blogging. I don't care if I am number one but want to be on the first page for Ham Lake Realtor and Anoka County Realtor, as well as a few others. AR helps me acheive my goals...Congrats on your success!
Congrats on the gold! Thanks for the google juice!
I would like to add that I have multiple domains pointed to one site but different directories. In this past google dance I have gained all sorts of ground with these sites that are supposed to kill me. You need to make sure you are linking relevant directories from your website to your posts. Remember, I said relevant and don't over do it!
I also think I am getting freaky juice from uploading localism pictures and adding long, keyword rich descriptions. Since I bolded the word "think" that shows I am not 100% positive. This is an exclusive on your blog only as my competition doesn't need to catch on so I won't be writing about it!
Mike
This post is great to share with the entire AR community. I also read the article that Renee put out and I re-organized my keywords and other things and guess what, I am also found right at the top of google #1 for almost all my key words or phrases. For everyone out there in AR Land this works. Mike thanks for sharing and congratulations, I know you have worked so hard.
Mike-
Way to differentiate yourself from the other 37 Mikes in Tucson...will the real Mike W. Jones please stand up? Great job!
Great post!! Amazing branding opportunity and always good to hear that the community has assisted in making it happen for you!!
Keep up on Renee Burrows stuff she has some great posts!
I agree with Bev. People search for whatever they need to find. If they already know that they are looking for "Mike in Tucson" they can either find you on Google or in Yellow Pages. But being #1 on Google for that search term doesn't make you the biggest "name brand" in the mortgage or realty business. Internet surfers are way more likely to search for "mortgage brokers in Tucson" or " best rate mortgages in Tucson area" or "homes for sale in Tucson by the park" etc etc.
Having a unique name is certainly better than not having one, but do keep in mind that you are not "Coca-cola" "Re-max" or "Apple". People will remember "Mike in Tucson" better than "Mike whatever" but first they must find you. If they don't know you they are not likely to search for you.
Are you tracking your web traffic?
Who should be able to find you? The people that already know you or the people who are searching for a lenders or Realtor in your area?
I would say both. So keep your "brand" but try getting traffic with other keywords as well. Keep it up.
First, lets talk to Bev the contrarian. She makes an absolutely perfect point. Not a person on the planet would ever think to Google "Mike in Tucson," unless...
Markets used to be penetrated by targeting a demographic sector, buying time and print in the media, and waiting for the phone to ring, or for the customer to walk in the store. Used to be... but not now.
Read Donna Yates' comment above. Why in the world would Donna, whom I've never met, mentally think "in Tucson" when she says "Mike?" It's because we've had a conversation by way of the internet, and it was interesting enough to her that she subscribed to my blog.
I'm not looking for customers. I want to penetrate spheres of influence. I'm marketing to people with names, and faces. To people who react to certain words that interest them, and have favorite places to go hang out. I'm marketing to the Broca's region of your brain, Bev. It's the part that sits up and takes notice when it's surprised. It has its own little file guy in your brain, and when you hear Mike, that little file guy runs right up and adds in Tucson.
Ask someone at work tomorrow to fill in the blank--Dr. __________. Chances are that they will say "Phil." And because my post struck such a negative chord with you, chances are that the next time someone says "Mike," your brain will add "in Tucson." You won't be able to help yourself. And that's a wonderful thing.
There's so much more to this that I want to say. I think I'll write a post on the subject. Bev, thanks for opening up one of the most useful conversations yet this month. I wish you had identified yourself; Active Rain is the perfect forum for useful debate, and I'm sure there are thousands of other members who believe, as you do for the moment, that I'm headed down the wrong trail.
Mike... see? You filled in the blank!
Mike, you are brilliant. It's branding and tagging blended together to create a much more powerful presence. You hit my Broca region!
So from Josette in Bethesda to Mike in Tuscon, thanks!
I'd better get started reciprocating on these comments. I will, I promise... later Sunday!
Thank you all for commenting!
Mike in Tucson
Mike, your post (as ususal) was great! The recent response to "Bev" is outstanding as well! Bravo, my man!
Mike in Tucson is a great asset to Tucson and to the entire Active Rain community..

Mike in Tucson -
Thank you! Thank you! I'm going to read Renee's post right now and start cleaning up my tags right now!
Thanks for the education on tags AND the creativity lesson with your brand!
Kathy
Mike In Tucson: I was responding to the title of your post "Zoom Zoom Zero to ..." While there is no question that "branded" products or services are better (for the seller/provider) than unbranded ones, I still don't think there is much value in being on #1 spot on Google for your brand name search unless your brand name is well known and people are searching for you. Even in the new Web 2.0 economy the old rules or marketing still apply. I can understand that you are building a brand. But how does being #1 on Google for the name that you picked helps in the brand building process? Unique names (IE LuLuLemon) rank very easily on Google.
Thanks for mentioning Cluetrain. Also check out Wikinomics.
Mike, I'm sure you're a nice guy and all, so please don't take this the wrong way, but you might want to think about doing some things that will actually help you grow your business online.
I'm with Raj (and many others) on this one. How many people are searching for "Tucson Real Estate" versus "Mike in Tucson"? Overture's keyword selector tools shows no suggestions (0 searches) for the latter and the numbers / suggestions below for Tucson real estate (numbers are for January, 2007).
Why don't you pick one of the less competitive suggestions here and shoot for optimizing for that?
Looks like you've started a controversy....which comes first the... Tucson or the Mike??
Congrats. again!!
I can't believe you guys. This whole thread is like an ad for Andrew Keen.
NOBODY'S SEARCHING FOR MIKE IN TUCSON.
"It's certainly important for referrals to associate Mike with where he is." What the heck are you talking about? If a Realtor wanted to do a referral, they'd search for "Tucson real estate" too.
"Branding is very important". Who do you think you are, Pepsi Cola?
"Consumers remember something catchy." No they don't. They don't care about you at all! They care about what they want. 40,000 of them wanted Tucson real estate or Tucson AZ real estate in January alone.
I don't have a brand. "John in Sacramento" probably isn't on any of the first thirty pages of Google, and yet I get 3,000 unique visitors a day to my real estate web sites.
Obscurity is not a virtue. Lowering the bar to obscurity so ActiveRain can step over it is damnation by faint praise.
Howdy Mike
I have to say something to John Lockwood.
Howdy John Lockwood
I want you to know that is one of the very best bolg writers on Active Rain. A very big # of folks look for blog posts by Mike. You have a way for folks to look for you and Mike is doing it his way. Mike is just leting folks know what has and is working for him.
Mr. Lockwood there is one more thing before telling someone what they should do, maybe you should read Mike's home page he is not a realtor he is in the lending business.
Mike
Have a good one
Your friend in NH Dale
Mike,
I agree 100%. I like the "Mike in Tucson" branding. AR is very good because of how fast the search engines pick things up that are posted on AR. Good luck.
Mike Lewis
Rebecca,
The issue is not deciding how we want be found. The issue is deciding WHETHER we want to be found, and then making up our minds whether it matters to us enough to invest the time and effort to learn how to get there, or if we want to set the bar low and then declare victory on ActiveRain. Blogging is "self-designed" in the same way fishing is self-designed because if I want I can go fishing and use integrated circuits for bait.
The problem is: fish eat worms.
Believe me, I'm not trying to make Mike in Tucson feel bad. I'd like him to have 3000 uniques a day like I do -- because I feel pretty darned good. :) I'll feel even better @ 6,000.
Let's play nice, boys and girls!
John: Why did you take down "The Wish?"
Mike in Tucson
Is someone not playing nice? We're having a discussion about effective keyword selection for real estate agents. I'm certainly not intending any of it as a personal assault and I'm not taking any of the replies personally. I hope everyone else is enjoying the discussion the same way.
Mike, I'm definitely not trying to detract from your accomplishment. Learning how to do SEO on less competitive keywords is a great first step toward more ambitious projects. In my case, the first real estate keywords I optimized for were very low producers compared to what I've done since. What I am pointing out is that you've selected a combination that -- while personally interesting -- is too low volume to be as profitable as some other selections might be. Selecting Real Estate Keywords discusses techniques I've used in the past to brainstorm others.
Mike, I took "The Wish" down because it expressed some strong personal feelings that I no longer wanted to publish. Why do you ask?
Good...ness! One would think we're talking life or death here. Hatfields and McCoys!
My Grandpa used to tell us "Simmer down!" I really do appreciate the give and take here. But give and take for its own sake is pointless.
Raj Dahliwal brings something to the table. Thanks, Raj. He's has a mortgage blog, and is the only person I've run across on Active Rain with more than 21,000 points who is a member of only one group, and has chosen no associates. Raj is totally focused on web traffic. (I've added him as an associate of mine, because I believe I can learn from Raj.)
John Lockwood picked up the ball and ran to the wrong end of the field. We should at least read a post all the way through just once--preferably twice if we're going to show off--before joining the discussion. Dale Baker's got a good point! And that's the real estate opinion of this Tucson, Arizona mortgage lender.
John's right on the money, though, when he says quietly, NOBODY'S SEARCHING FOR MIKE IN TUCSON. He's right. No one will ever find me anonomously by searching Mike in Tucson. They will find me, though, because of tags in my content. That happened a couple of weeks ago when an 81 year old retiree went searching on the internet for someone in Tucson to help him refinance his manufactured home. The title tag brought him my way. He may not remember my last name, but he does remember Mike in Tucson. And he talks about me to his friends.
Bev didn't want to let us know who she/he really is. Okay.
Rebecca Chambliss is right about choosing how we are found. In the case of Mike in Tucson, I've chosen a way for people to remember me easily. Mike Jones isn't memorable, unless you're a member of the rap generation. But as a brand, Mike in Tucson has stickiness. It's memorable, and easy to recall. And the search engines at Google do the rest.
It goes with out saying that anyone who has been out in the rain for any time at all and wanted a mortgage lender in Tucson Arizona would know Mike in Tucson was the man to see.
Having said that debates like this present a great learning curve for the knowledge seeker. There are always two sides to everything including the issues here.
Depending on their intent both sides to this debate are right. While focus on brand building is important to a person who is their own brand focus on traffic building is important to us all.
For example who in their right mind would search for the Clulow Connection to find a Realtor in Uxbridge Ontario. however if you are searching for a very wide variety of things in Uxbridge pages from our various sites, blogs or links to us show up in the top ten world wide. Who would have thought that a search for Uxbridge directory would bring up three pages from one of our site myuxbridge.info in the top ten. Why is it important to have people find our sites for a wide variety of searches -- traffic, traffic helps our Google juice.
Our goal is to be in the top ten for the widest range of searches possible.
Mike,
I am rather new hear so I can't comment on my surge in Google. (not yet anyway!!) With a last name of JONES I am going to have to be a little creative. Thanks for the inspiring post.
Congrats, Mike. You've tapped into a great strategy, and I thank you for sharing!
Brian Wilson, Zolve.com
Who? Mike Jones! Who? Mike Jones!
I know you are going to kill me for that but I just happened to be watching a TV show at this very moment with Mike Jones appearing and well you know the rest. Sorry! It was just sooo coincidental.
Thanks for this post. I will give more thought to tagging my posts.
Mike in Tucson,
Good post. Really a great job on getting it done the right way!
Good morning, all. I'll be back later in the day to thank each of you for commenting, but Eric made me laugh. For the uninitiated, Mike Jones is a rap artist.
Eric: Tucson has 37,000 students at the U of A. I'm a lender, and have a sign on the back of my Explorer. One morning last fall, I was driving to work early, with the windows up, and I heard a chant above the morning news on the radio. Looking up to the rear view mirror, I saw a small car following me, with students hanging out the windows yelling Mike Jones! Mike Jones! Who Mike Jones! They followed me for about a mile. I've never again had such an entourage.
Mike,
Thanks for the informative post!
Thanks,
This is a very well written article which really helped me understand.
The discussion was very useful as well.

Mike, I came back by after a few days and, hmmmm where did John go?
There's an opinion this Fort Worth Realtor has and it's that you're one of the best writers here in the Rain, I'm glad that I "met" you here, and because you're a wonderful writer is why I subscribed to you blog and why I keep reading. So there!
That deserves a special cup of coffee!
Thanks, Linda

Guide to Seattle Real Estate
Mary: Thanks for the comment. See you soon!
Julie: I only use a tag word if that word appears in the post. Members Only posts don't get any tags, since Google can't "see" them. But if I'm writing a blog on FSBO's, and I think people will be searching the term FSBO, by all means, I would use that acroym as a tag. Where we go wrong is tagging every word we think is relevant. You've used "the heart of giving by a Utah real estate girl" 18 times as a tag. What's effective is using what the client is looking for. It might be more effective if you broke it up each time like this: heart of giving, utah, utah real estate. People might be searching those terms. Chances are they're not searching for "real estate girl" but when they're searching for "Utah real estate" you want them to find you.
Mark: It is about branding. Thanks for commenting.
Jonathan: I'll come take a look.

Love the comment strand. Apparently you will become one of my associates as I do not subscribe to blogs. Very happy to recognize Renee on your blog. She is definitely an Active AR member. Thanks for the tips in your post about tags.
Thanks, Wes! I'd be honored to be on your Associates list! The comments on my posts are better than the post itself, most of the time.
