Tucson By Choice!: Birding in Tucson, AZ: Madera Canyon and the Elegant Trogon

Birding in Tucson, AZ: Madera Canyon and the Elegant Trogon

Elegant Trogon, Madera Canyon, Tucson, AZ

I've read about the Elegant Trogon, a magnificent bird that makes its way north of the border when springtime arrives in Tucson.  I've seen one in the Coronado National Forest.  Until today, though, I had never photographed a Trogon.

Dave Young, who ramrodded our birder outing, is a retired geologist.  He's an avid birder and a born teacher. Being with Dave is like having your own Docent from the Desert Museum.

Ten of us--all friends from church--met at 8:00 this morning at Exit 63 on Interstate 19, and carpooled up into Madera Canyon, just north of Elephant Head.

We saw 20 species of birds before noon, including the elusive Elegant Trogon.

It's hard to see in the photo, but the head of the Trogon is a deep emerald green. The word "magnificent" doesn't do it justice. Take a look at the show below; we saw a flock of turkeys, too!

Mike, I have a bird here in my area that I can not identify. It makes a neat sound that I thought was a whiporwhill but it isnt. I am trrying to capture the sound on tape so I can see if someone can identify it for me! I love the ways it sounds. Also... did you see the mention I gave you on my blog today?!

Mike - That is a great way to spend time with friends.  The things around us can give us much joy.

Your real estate show was delightful, I will send it to my son-in-law he loves birds.

Jennifer,

Thanks for reading and commenting!  Madera Canyon is known as a birder's mecca!

Susan,

I don't know a lot of birds by their call, but several of the people on the hike today could listen to a call and tell us the name of the bird.

Mike,

I can tell by your blog that the day was very special.  There is nothing like comming home with a trophy photo and your best friends to vouch for the experience.  Congratulations.

Mike, I can't see the show???  In fact your show on the side bar is gone, too.  I wonder if it's because I'm in explorer instead of firefox?

Oh, that Elegant Trogon is very pretty also.  I bet the red and emerald green looked beautiful in person.

Fran,

Thanks, man!

Doreen,

I use IE for my browser, so I can't explain why you can't see the RES.  Once I posted the article, I wasn't able to edit in WYSIWYG, though, and had to edit in HTML.

Hey, I got the RES now.  It didn't even show up for me before.  That was a strange lizard.

Doreen,

I'm glad you were able to see the Real Estate Show;  As a kid in South America, we had lizards that were four feet long and weighed fifteen pounds!
