I've seen some interesting things as home decor, but this one surprised me.
The old BMW is a little dusty because my friend, the owner of the home, is renovating his kitchen. He needed some help, and I offered free labor as a carpenter.
My question about the motorcycle in the living room earned a short response: "It's art." But then he educated me about the BMW company.
Here's what I learned.
- The blue and white BMW logo represents a spinning propeller.
- BMW manufactured some of the world's most sophisticated airplanes prior to WWII.
- The post-WWII restrictions on Germany by the Allies included a prohibition to BMW's aircraft production. They decided to build motorcycles and cars.
- This particular motorcycle has no battery. Like a small plane, it has a magneto to provide the spark for combustion.
You probably couldn't have made it through the day without knowing this, could you? :)

"You probably couldn't have made it through the day without knowing this, could you? :)"
All can say is, thanks for another little "brain imprint".
Mike,
this is a very informative post. I knew about BMW building aircraft but did not know the reasons why they started the cars and motorcycles.
Mike--I love interesting tidbits...As for livingroom "art", I guess there could be worse. :)
My ex husband had a 1965 Mustang engine and seats in the bedroom.
Notice I said "ex" husband.
LOL!!! some people would just love this as artwork!

Mike .. thanks for the fun article about BMW living room art. Nice. Harrison
Mike,
Thank you for the fun facts. It sure is very unusual for a home decor but a great conversation piece.
Mike - That motorcycle reminds me of a time when I was expecting the birth of my son (1964). My husband back then, was an avid motorcycle buff. When he been discharged from the Army the previous year, he had purchased an old Royal Enfield in New Jersey, and then proceeded to ride it home to California. His hands looked like mince meat when he arrived. But, possibly that is because he had never riden a motor cycle prior to then. We didn't have health care back then, and we ended up selling the motor cycle to pay for the birth of our son. Can you believe it was only $250. for the doctor, and $250. for the hospital. Fond memories for sure. . .But those crotch rockets can cause a lot of damage if you aren't careful.
I'm wondering what his wife thinks???
Marchel,
He's single.
Myrl,
That is a great story. I can't believe the hospital stay and doctor bills came to a whopping $500!

You're welcome. Thanks for coming by to comment.

Why does that not surprise me (lol).
I do enjoy the trivia and the art I'm sure someone would appreciate the remains in the living room.
Terry,
My Darlin' loves to watch Bones on TV. I watch it with her. I didn't see any "...remains in the living room." LOL
Marchel,
I knew you would appreciate knowing that!

Mike- When I came across your blog about the vulture I saw a part of you photo of the BMW motorcycle. I have been riding BMW motorcycles for 25 years and am on my third one right now. I know the history of the BMW motorcycle and what is strange is some people don't even know they made a motorcycle and that the bikes were made before the cars. Great post and I will blog a story and photo of my Beamer in the future.
Thanks for the trivia about BMW - I have long been a fan of those cars, and did not know that about the logo. Thanks for sharing!
Those were indeed some interesting BMW facts that I wasn't aware of. My sister used to drive a BMW motorcycle with a sidecar!
