Tucson By Choice!: Moving Day: The Modern Equivalent of the Conestoga Wagon

Moving Day: The Modern Equivalent of the Conestoga Wagon

Mexico bound cargoSaturday afternoon, and we were headed east on Interstate 10 from Phoenix to Tucson.  Most of the highway is marked for 75 miles per hour.

This modern day conestoga wagon has Mexico license plates, too much cargo for the pickup bed, and darn little holding the whole thing together.

One man's trash is another man's treasure, and it's not unusual to see overloaded pickup trucks like this heading down I-10 to I-19, and ultimately to Mexico.

This load didn't look like it was going to make it the next ten miles, let alone the 100 miles to Mexico!

I wasn't real comfortable thinking about all that cargo spilling loose and coming through my windshield, so I floored it a little to get past him.

As I approached, I took these two photos for your viewing pleasure!

Mexico bound, if everything holds together at 75 mph!

Wow...that's a load isn't it?  I kept looking at the 'stuff'. I guess it meant something to them :)

Sally,

It's all for resale south of the border.  You'll see more stuff each time you come back to that second picture!  Do you see the circular table frame?

Mike - that's a great way of describing it:  "The Modern-Day Conestoga Wagon!"  Have you seen the pickup trucks hauling cardboard to recycle in Mexico?  Piled just as high, but a lot heavier...you can tell by the springs groaning as you pass by.

Oh my goodness.  I would be surprised if any of there stuff made it to their destination.  Thanks for sharing and the laugh.

Mike,

I was waiting to see Granny sitting on her rocking chair sorta like the Clampetts heading to Beverly Hills.

Yes I think I would have gotten around him quickly. Speeding ticket or not its better than a desk on the hood.

this is a creative way of describing it. I also had images of Granny Clampett or the dead granny in the Chevy Chase movie.

I have never seen anyone that crazy on the highway before.  That is almost unbelievable.

Hi Mike:

We see that here on the roads as well.  It's un-avoidable, something falls out.  Steer clear!!!

Ya know what strikes me?  That is a fairly new, rather pricey 4 door truck (I'm thinking its worth maybe 18-20K??) .... It's not a dinged and dented, banged-up-and-battered, barely-rattling-along ride like the Clampletts.   That's one ~nice~ truck.  Interesting. (At least to me.)

Lynn,

Thanks for stopping by.

CJ,

I noticed that too.  It's why I think that the load is going to Mexico for resale.  Thanks for commenting.

Toula,

Don't you wonder if he made it?

It sure looks like the Bevery Hillbillies got a new truck!  I'd be scared to get close enough to take a picture.....once a ladder suddenly flew off the truck in front of me as we sped down the interestate.  That thing was bouncing everywhere and traumatized me!

Ann,

I'd love to know if he made it all the way down to Mexico in one piece!
